Hey guys.
Here is some more stuff, sorry for so many sketches and shit, I don't have much finished work as of late. I'm trying to get more serious about my art after many years of just dicking around and it's taking me time to get a handle on my new art making process. I'm already slow as shit and adding a new way of doing stuff doesn't help.
Anyway. Here are some sketches for the next thing I'm working on. Trying to do more fantasy based personal work since my dream job is working for WotC doing DnD and magic stuff. This one is going to be a DnD style illo, going to try and make it look like the stuff they have in their books.
I just wanted to illustrate the value of not getting attached to your work, which I do the time. This is a progression of the composition I planned on using, starting with an original sketch I did while at work one day. Of course I was screwed from the start because I used a photo ref for the figure and it was impossible to match a horizon line and vanishing point up to her body. For me anyway, using direct photo reference for things only tightens up my sketches and locks me into shitty compositions or poses. Keeping direct photo ref to your studies seems to work better, for me anyway.
So as you can see I struggled with the composition for awhile, moving shit around and trying to force it to look good but not much really changed from image to image. When I stopped searching and started noodling on her head and horns it was all done. From that point on I didn't want to move anything because I liked the way it looked. So after screwing around with this for a few hours I just had enough and said fuck it. From my imagination I tried to think up something that would look more dynamic and professional and came up with the last two images in the set. I'm far happier with this composition than the first one. It has far more potential to be a great piece and even if I can't push it far enough to be great it's challenging enough that I'll learn a ton doing it.
So in short, fuck your work, it's all expendable!.
